Not being physically active is a leading contributor to disease and disability, accounting for:
- 22 percent of colon cancer,
- 18 percent of osteoporosis-related fractures, and
- 12 percent of diabetes and hypertension.
It doesn't take a lot to make a difference. A recent study showed that participants who engaged in moderate exercise - most walking for 30 minutes a day, five days a week - and who ate less fat and fewer calories lost 10 to 15 pounds and reduced their risk of getting diabetes by 58 percent.
