Try this instead of salt or sugar
Changing your habits to make healthier food choices may be easier said than done. But the University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension offers these simple ways to lower sugar or salt in your diet. Herbs and spices can help.
To reduce sugar: Reduce or eliminate sugar by using these sweet-tasting spices instead of sugar for flavor: allspice, anise, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, mace, or nutmeg.
To reduce salt: Savory flavors, and flavors with "bite," such as black pepper, garlic powder, curry powder, cumin, dill seeds, basil, ginger, coriander, and onion, are the most effective in replacing the taste of salt. Use minced or powdered garlic and onion rather than their salt form. Omit the salt when cooking pasta and flavor with basil, oregano, parsley, or pepper.
